Jen Mussari x 29Rooms
In collaboration with Refinery29 and Madame Gandhi, I created the hand-painted art installation “The Future is Female” to allow space for a healthy expression of rage.
In September of 2017, I created this visual art installation to accompany Madame Gandhi’s single, The Future is Female. The fully interactive installation invited guests to strap on hand-painted gloves and hit, punch, and kick the similarly painted punching bags throughout the room. Upon contact, the room would be filled with percussive sounds pulled directly from the beat of the song, creating a totally unique audio landscape from the guests’ movements.
To create the immersive room, I designed and painted wall murals as well as 12 punching bags, and over 24 pairs of gloves. The lettering and art was created by pulling quotations from the accompanying song but also by contributing my own gender ideology: “The Future is Female, The Future is Non-Binary, The Future is Trans, The Future is Fluid, The Future is Queer,” “The Future is Made of What We Do Each Day,” and “The Future is Worth Fighting For.”
This installation traveled to five different US cities between 2017-2018: New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia, where I painted directly on-site and in collaboration with tech, lighting, and sound teams.
29Rooms and The Future is Female installation saw tens of thousands of guests, and had an equally impactful social presence, a selection of which can be seen below.
